hi!
i was just wondering how super8 film can be spliced without the use of a viewer and other machines, manually. is there a special cement that i can use or even a product around the house i can use.
i attempted nail polish for some reason, and obviously that didn't work (dah!). i also stupidly fucked up a roll by joining it to another roll with sticky tape, needless to say the projector started making new holes on the film and jittered the projection.
of course by now you can tell that im not only a beginner but also a stupid one.
thanks for your help.

You will absolutely need a viewer, and a splicer of some type.
I have gone from splice tapes to cement splices, because they are permanent and cheaper.
However, for a biginner, the tapes are the best way to go.
The one I recommend, is the Hervic Splicer, with Hervic splice tapes, because they only cover one frame on each side of the cut (unlike the Kodak tapes), so you can't see the edit crap as much (hair & lint & stuff trapped in the tape, as well as the wonderful optical quality of the tape material!).

A splicer is a must, I do not know brands, but any is better than cellotape, I imagine a cement splicer is cheaper than a tape one, yet tape is easier use i think.
Vanbar in melbourne has cement for $20, not sure where you are though, good luck.

Like Matt P. said, Hervic is the best, especially if you have never spliced before. If you are not doing any real editing and just want to tape the rolls together you don't have to have a viewer but if you are serious about filmmaking you have to do better than nail polish and cello tape.
